Our little list of handy newborn items
I decided to write this post because I feel like when a baby is due we spend so much money on so many unnecessary things and fret that our homes aren't ready for a baby. I also probably wrote this so I could have an excuse to post pictures of Poppy when she was a third of the size she is now and cry salty tears on my laptop key board!
At the end of the day babies don't really need that much (cue eyeroll as my baby has a bigger wardrobe than me)! Here is my list of things that we found helpful, some are cheap and some are worth their weight in gold.
If I could speak to my heavily pregnant self, I would say, stop fretting about the nursery. It is going to be one giant glorified change room for the first three months anyway!
1. Babynest co-sleeper
This bassinet is one of those things that I said is worth its weight in gold. It is a co-sleeper meaning the sides can come down and the height can be adjusted so that bub sleeps perfectly next to you but safely in their own bed. In the beginning during those magical (sleepless) nights it is so handy not having to get out of bed each time bub needs feeding/settling.
The mattress seemed to be actually comfortable, which can be hard to find in bassinets and it seems to be a bit bigger than other bassinets.
Danish by Design is, I believe, Australia's only stockist of these co-sleepers.
2. Two Tykes wraps and swaddles
The best swaddles I found are the ones from Two Tykes. They were soft immediately, created a strong straight jacket, have beautiful prints and seemed to wear well in the wash.
3. Snuggle Me Organic
A lounger pillow that is designed for bub to feel like they are being held when you lay them down. Really easy to lift and manoeuvre around the house, great for during the day when they are little and you want to actually get something done (other than staring at them). Unfortunately, it needs to be shipped from the US so postage is expensive.
4. Buffalo Bugaboo
We absolutely love our pram, the Bugaboo Buffalo. My dad made it his job to research every pram possible before Poppy was born and we feel his surveying of mums definitely paid off. It’s a really sturdy pram, easy to take apart, Pops has always seemed happy in it and I have heard has great resale. We went with the Buffalo over the Chameleon due to the bigger wheels, which I would recommend unless you have pristine footpaths everywhere you will be wheeling bub around.
5. Gathre mats
I absolutely love Gathre products. They are wipeable leather mats of different sizes for different occasions. These have been amazing for us as Poppy is a little spewer so it has decreased (even if slightly) the amount of washing required. I have one large mat in the back of my car for the beach, one at home as a play mat and a slim small one on top of our change mat.
6. Material carrier
We used material baby carriers heaps when Poppy was a freshie. They are so handy for going out for a walk, going to the supermarket or if bub is unsettled at home but you want your hands free for annoying house chores. We found it extremely useful in the first 3 months before Poppy seemed to be big enough for the proper baby carrier (like a Baby Bjorn or ErgoBaby carrier).
We had two top picks on baby carriers depending on what you are after
1: Chekoh Baby Carriers - single piece of material that you learn to tie into a carrier, takes a bit of getting used to and at the start is better to have another pair of hands to help, but is convenient as it can be adjusted for any size of baby and person carrying
2: Yoli & Otis - two fixed pieces of material that cross over the body, very handy as they are easy to put on alone, but downside is that mum and dad may not be able to use the same carrier due to differing sizes and once bub outgrows the carrier it cannot be adjusted
7. Nature Baby Organic Basics
Nature Baby is a beautiful NZ brand that do organic basics like no other. For when your bub is teeny tiny and needs help keeping warm, their singlets and onesies are so lovely and soft!
8. Baby bath
We don't have a bath at our house but even if we did I think baby baths are so handy at the start. We have one that sits in our laundry trough and it makes it so easy not having to lean down or get in the bath to bathe Poppy. It also doesn't require as much water as filling a bath tub would.
We don't have a brand on our bath but this one looks similar.
9. Bonds Wondersuits
Nothing groundbreaking here but they are hard to beat. Relatively cheap, good quality, have a zip (do not get anything with buttons when it comes to pjs, you do not want to be dealing with them and a pooey nappy at 3am), can get plain or crazy prints, have feet to keep the tootsies warm and have the option of covering or uncovering the hands.
10. not an item but a reminder
As cliché as it is, it goes so fricken fast!!! Poppy is now seven months old and I have no idea where that time has gone!
Savour all the cuddles, take it slow, do whatever feels right for your family! Because before you know it you’ll be the one saying, “I can’t believe she/he was ever that small”.
